Island of Murter

The island of Murter is located in a slightly outlying part of Croatia in the Sibenik region, between Vodice and Biograd. It is a fairly small island. There are only three villages on it, Murter, Betina and Jezera. The island of Murter is popular with sailors. The harbours of the three settlements can accommodate nearly 1000 boats at a time. Find out more about Murter’s attractions and its main beaches.

Suggested route from Vodice: Mutere is reached via road 121. Head towards Tisno where you will cross the drawbridge to the island of Murter. It takes only 20 minutes and the scenery is spectacular.

The island of Murter lies on the northern border of Croatia’s Sibenik region. It is separated from the mainland by a 36-metre wide channel. Murter Island is reached via a movable bridge in Tisno. By default the bridge is in a trimmed, usable condition, but it is lifted twice a day to allow water traffic to pass.

Very important: in summer it is closed from 9 to 9.30 in the morning and from 17 to 17.30

If you arrive at this time, you have to wait until it is lowered. If you arrive by boat, the navigable part of the Tisno Bridge is only 6 metres.

The island of Muter lies in a longitudinal direction in the Adriatic. It covers an area of 18 km2, the highest point being the 125-metre high Raduc hill near the town of Murter. The main source of livelihood for the 5,000 inhabitants is olive and grass cultivation, shipping and tourism;

There are many excellent beaches in Biograd anyway, but if you want the best attraction in the area, try Mirnovec Park, 4 kilometres from the city (advertised as Fun Park Biograd in many places). This is the exact GPS coordinate. Biograd’s aqua park covers 50,000 square metres. It has several themed areas, such as pirate, western, dinosaur and space themes. There are 25 attractions in total. There are also areas specifically for children, such as the dino park and the Beauty and the Beast teacup ride. Schoolchildren can go on water rides, try out the pirate ship, but many teens also ride the giant space swing. The roller coaster is the coolest ride in the water park. This roller coaster goes in a circle, which means it goes completely around in a circle, and then it goes around horizontally.

Murter is a true boat(s) paradise. With the exception of Tisno, all the municipalities have extensive harbours. Jezera has 200 berths, Murter 500 and Betina 200. Wherever you go on the island, you’ll find yachts and sailing boats of all kinds. Traditionalists can see how boats were built hundreds of years ago in Betina, where boats are still assembled from wood in a unique way. Murter’s greatest pride is that the people of Murter Town own the entire Kornati National Park. We know it’s a bit strange and hard to believe, but the entire National Park is privately owned. There are around 2000 owners of the National Park, which covers 220 km2 and includes 150 islands and rocky reefs. The Kornati Islands are undoubtedly the number one attraction of the whole area. There are also many boat trips from Murter Island to the Kornati archipelago. We recommend taking at least one of these boat trips, as they make for a memorable holiday experience. The bays and beaches of the island are also worth mentioning. Murter has a number of secluded and deserted bays where you can beach almost on your own. On the south side of the island, there are several coves that are accessible either on foot or by boat. Such beaches are usually very sparsely populated. The best beach on Murter is Slanica, on the north-western side of the island. It is a west-facing, very slowly deepening, sandy beach. As the beach is on the outskirts of Murter, it is well equipped. There are several catering facilities, sunbeds for hire and showers. In addition to Slanica, other beaches in other towns are also worth a visit. All beaches in Murter are free of charge.
